Native
Carnivorous Plants of New York state.
I am
aware of only four species of CPs native to central & western New York.
Sarracenia
purpurea
Drosera
intermedia
Drosera
rotundifolia
Pinguicula
vulgaris
Sarracenia
purpurea is the "Purple pitcher plant" and is the only sarracenia found
naturally
this
far north.
It
can be found is several wild bogs around New York state.
the
two species of sundew, Drosera intermedia and Drosera rotundifolia can
be found in the same bogs as the purps..
The
Butterwort, Pinguicula vulgaris, is another story!
It
does not grow with the purps and the sundews, and instead is found growing
on high,
steep
cliffs in the Finger Lakes region, where water seeps out the rock faces.
I
know of only one P. vulgaris site, and it is dangerous to reach..I have
not tried it yet.
Here
are some photos of a wild CP bog in Western NY, containing S. purpurea
and D. intermedia.
This
is the bog, the plants grow in floating mats of living Spagnum moss.
Pitcher
plants!!
This
bog has a wooden boardwalk, allowing you to walk right out among the plants.
Drosera
intermedia.
Sundews
All
those red plants in the foreground are sundews!
Look
at all those Sarracenia flowers!
