- Concerning the
heritage of FGLK 2307.
I
currently have
the heritage of 2307 listed as:
nee L&N
5125
to SBD 3124
to CSX 3124
to P&W
2213
to FGLK 2307
I
believe that
is correct.
Some
on-line rosters
list 2307's heritage as:
nee L&N
5125
to SBD 3125
to CSX 3125
to P&W
2213
to FGLK 2307
I
believe that
is incorrect..
The
L&N, P&W
and FGLK numbers are not in doubt,
the
question
is in the middle, namely which CSX number road number became P&W
2213,
and thus
FGLK
2307.
In the
begining,
1978, there were fifteen L&N B23-7's:
L&N
5115
L&N 5116
L&N 5117
L&N 5118
L&N 5119
L&N 5120
L&N 5121
L&N 5122
L&N 5123
L&N 5124
L&N 5125
L&N 5126
L&N 5127
L&N 5128
L&N 5129
Unit
5123 is the
wrench in the works..causing this whole CSX number question.
It is
believed
5123 was scrapped at some point, throwing off the sequence..
If it had
NOT
been scrapped, the sequence would be nice and neat, like this:
L&N
5115
SBD 3115 CSX 3115
L&N
5116
SBD 3116 CSX 3116
L&N
5117
SBD 3117 CSX 3117
L&N
5118
SBD 3118 CSX 3118
L&N
5119
SBD 3119 CSX 3119
L&N
5120
SBD 3120 CSX 3120
L&N
5121
SBD 3121 CSX 3121
L&N
5122
SBD 3122 CSX 3122
L&N
5123
SBD 3123 CSX 3123
L&N
5124
SBD 3124 CSX 3124
L&N
5125
SBD 3125 CSX 3125
L&N
5126
SBD 3126 CSX 3126
L&N
5127
SBD 3127 CSX 3127
L&N
5128
SBD 3128 CSX 3128
L&N
5129
SBD 3129 CSX 3129
notice
every row
lines up numerically striaght across.
If this had
happened,
L&N 5125
would be CSX 3125,because
all numbers align,
but im
pretty
sure that is NOT what happened in reality.
Because!
There
are some on-line rosters that indicate one unit, 5123,
was scrapped..
and SBD and
CSX
simply skipped over that unit in their renumburing, resulting in this:
L&N
5115
SBD 3115 CSX 3115
L&N
5116
SBD 3116 CSX 3116
L&N
5117
SBD 3117 CSX 3117
L&N
5118
SBD 3118 CSX 3118
L&N
5119
SBD 3119 CSX 3119
L&N
5120
SBD 3120 CSX 3120
L&N
5121
SBD 3121 CSX 3121
L&N
5122
SBD 3122 CSX 3122
L&N
5124
SBD 3123 CSX 3123
L&N
5125
SBD 3124 CSX 3124
L&N
5126
SBD 3125 CSX 3125
L&N
5127
SBD 3126 CSX 3126
L&N
5128
SBD 3127 CSX 3127
L&N
5129
SBD 3128 CSX 3128
Notice
that L&N
5123 is gone, and SBD and CSX simply carry on without it,
NOT
skipping
a number in their sequence.
This P&W
roster, and this CSX
roster show what I believe is the correct data.
I think
its quite
likely that someone would simply miss the fact that one unit had been
scrapped,
and assume
the
sequence is "complete" and matches sequentially from top to bottom,
resulting
in
the data that says FGLK 2307 is CSX 5125
nee L&N 3125.
But is
not likely
someone would invent a scrapped engine where none actually existed! ;)
so im going
with
the "scrapped engine" theory, making FGLK 2307 CSX 3124 nee
L&N 3125.
unless
proven
otherwise..
*Note 2 -
Concerning FGLK Coaches 1642 and 1643.
I did a lot of digging on these coaches!
and have put together a history for them:
There were three cars at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant in
Lewiston, Maine.
(in the 1970's and 1980's) (anyone know the dates for when they arrived
and left the Restaurant?)
N&W coaches 1642, 1643 and N&W Diner 492.
Diner 492 was a 36-seat streamlined diner, built by Pullman in 1949 for
the Powhatan Arrow,
and is currently at the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway, NH.
(arrived there in 2008)
Coaches 1642 and 1643 are currently with the Finger Lakes Railway in
Geneva, NY,
and are used in excursion service..
Here is a history I have put together for coaches 1642 and 1643:
1916 - Cars built by Harlan and Hollingsworth company for Norfolk &
Western.
1970's and 1980's - Used as part of the "Chuck Wagon" Restaurant
in Lewiston, Maine.
1989 - October, Purchased and moved by "MRG, Inc./Downeast
Rail"
1990 - 2002 - Gradually restored, by MRG/Downeast Rail, at Maine Coast
RR, but rarely used.
2002 - Used for the one-season operation of the Niagara & Western
New York Railroad, Lockport, NY
2004 - October - brought to Geneva, NY, initally stored for a private
owner.
200? - Purchased by Finger Lakes Railway, repainted, and placed in
service.
2009 - In service with FGLK..crews call 1642 and 1643 "The Reds"
"The three ex-N&W cars that
went to the Chuck Wagon Restaurant in Lewiston were:
N&W 492 36-seat streamlined
diner; built by Pullman-Standard in 1949
for the Powhatan Arrow, later assigned to the Pocohantas, retired by
N&W in 1971.
N&W 1642 64-seat all-steel
coach: reblt 1949 w/ A/C & R/B trucks;
former 78-seat coach; built by Harlan & Hollingsworth 1915
N&W 1643 64-seat all-steel
coach: reblt 1949 w/ A/C & R/B trucks;
former 78-seat coach; built by Harlan & Hollingsworth 1915
All three cars were original
N&W equipment (i.e., not ex-NKP or ex-Wabash).
The two coaches, as rebuilt,
had a center partition for service as "Jim Crow" cars if needed."
