LAWRENCE Glenwood
Cemetary Records.
Transcribed and
Contributed by Eloise Wilson.
Glenwood
Cemetary is in the North-West corner
of Waverly, NY, my hometown. (cemetary is alongside Waverly Glen)
many of my Lawrence ancestors are buried there. I also have a photo
album of grave stones from Glenwood Cemetary.
This record contains a mystery for me..
It lists my Great Great Great Grandfather's name as (32) "David
Campbell Lawrence"
(father of (16) James Campbell Lawrence, who's name is not in question.)
This is the only record I have seen for a David Campbell Lawrence, and
I believe this information is incorrect.
Because the records of Prudence Fosdick Lawrence, (source 11
above) list a Jacob Lawrence, born 18 NOV 1817,
with a son James from Waverly, NY..so based on that, I believe Jacob is
actually my (32)
Great
Great Great Grandfather. Also, my source #7, the pedigree chart drawn
by my Grandfather's brother, shows Jacob Lawrence was married to (33)
Margaret Ann DEGROFF, and my Dad knows that Degroff's were relatives of
ours, and several Degroff's are buried in Glenwood cemetary alongside several
Lawrence's..So im quite certain Jacob Lawrence is my ancestor, not David
Campbell Lawrence.
I dont know who David
Campbell Lawrence is, or why his name is associated with my actual
ancestor (16)
James Campbell Lawrence, I
will try to learn more. |

CAMPBELL
|
The
Lawrence Family of Cayuta Lake, by
Jeanne Bleiler.
I'm very curious about this group of
Lawrence's!
so far, I dont know if I am descended from any of them, although we do
share a common ancestor.
what makes me wonder if I am more directly connected to them is the
middle name of my Great Great Grandfather, (16) James Campbell
Lawrence. There IS a known Campbell family in the mix of the Cayuta
Lake Lawrences! So im wondering if Jame's middle name is a connection
to the Cayuta Lake group, a family name that wound up as his middle
name..And Cayuta Lake is only 30 miles from Waverly, so there is also a
very close geographic relationship between my Tioga County Lawrences
and the Cayuta Lake Lawrences. See my "Lawrences of Cayuta Lake" page
for more info.

Sources
66 - 93 below (and numbers 4, 5, 7, and 11 above) have all been handed
down from my Grandfather, to my father, then to me.
they
all originally belonged to my Grandfather, Daniel Lawrence, and likely
his parents as well..
I
have read in genealogy books "NEVER write on old photographs!"
I dont
agree with that! because I am very grateful my grandfather had the
foresight to write, in light pencil, on the back of all these photos,
with the names of the people in the photos!
THANK
YOU Grandfather! If not for his writing, we wouldnt know who all these
people are. Some
genealogists may cringe, but im in favor of writing on photos! (using
pencil only, and writing lightly on the back.)
I also
have a much older family photo album, that came along with all my
grandfather's photos, with photos of people I can only assume are old
relatives and ancestors..some of the photos are tin-types! all clearly
19th century images..but none
are marked..apparently they are so old
even my Grandfather didnt know who they were. Now, their identities are
lost forever..there is no one alive who could possibly
identify them.
I believe they might all be Ackles, (my Grandfather's Mother's family)
because many of the photos have studio names from Spencer, NY on the
back.
I wish
someone had written on the back of them too, like my Grandfather did
with the newer photos. Here is one of the mystery photos:
Alas, old relative, I dont know who you are.
But fortunately I do have a nice collection of Lawrence photographic
family history of the 20th century, preserved, and identified!
(scans of all these are coming soon..in progress)

DEGROFF
|
Handwritten
note by Daniel Lawrence. probably from the
1960's or 70's.
My Grandfather (Dan) and his brother (Richard Leslie Lawrence)
attempted to do some family tree research in the 1960's and 70's.It
seems they never got much formally organized, but I am fortunate to
have inherited their notes and research. This note says:
Windham Summit Cemetery:
1. - G.S. Lawrence, B. Oct 5, 1833 - d.
May 21, 1882
Baldwin Cem.
1. Sarah Degroff. d. Jan
29, 1898
2. Rosetta, d. of Elisha
and Sarah DeGroff.
(probably "Rosetta, daughter
of Elisha and Sarah DeGroff.)
I dont know who these three people are! There is no G.S. Lawrence in my
records..
The Degroff's are probably relatives of my Great X 3 Grandmother, (33)
Margaret DEGROFF.
Mother of (16) James Campbell LAWRENCE.
Windham Summit Cemetery is in Bradford County, PA, just south of
Nichols, NY.
(where it is known James Campbell Lawrence lived.)
and Baldwin Cemetery is probably the one in nearby Litchfield Township,
Pa.
I must plan trips to these cemeterys!

William
Talladay and Polly Jones gedcom
I would be careful about all the gedcoms on
rootsweb and ancestry.com..many look very questionable. These gedcoms
are the source of most of the conflicting internet information on the
TALLADAY's..some of it is probably correct..but much of it is likely
incorrect, by varying degrees..
the trick is figuring out what is correct and what isnt..
(im not saying the particular one I linked above is bad! ;) I dont know
if it is or not..all I know is that there are a LOT of them on the
internet, and I have found many that I can already tell are obviously
wrong.)

Baptism certificate
of my father, (2) Richard Lee Lawrence.
This is very interesting!
Im going through my Dad's papers in October 2009, a few months after he
passed away, and I come across his Baptism Certificate, I have never
seen it before..
My Dad was baptised April 4, 1942, in Waverly, NY. When he was 7 months
old.
The baptism certificate itself isnt surprising..what IS surprising is
that it it seems to be a CATHOLIC baptism certificate! I have never
heard
of any Lawrence's being Catholic! As far as I have always known I come
from a Christian heritage, but definately not Catholic specifically..
I do want to explore the religious beliefs of my ancestors, and post
anything I find out about their religious lives..churches they went to,
denominations, different religions in my family tree, etc..this adds an
interesting new twist!
Update! further research
shows the wording and artwork might not be
Catholic-specific.
it could also be Lutheran or some other denomination..stay tuned!
Update 2!
I posted a scan of the certificate (minus names and
dates) here.
turns out its an Episcopal church..
Grace
Church in Waverly to be exact. 441 Park ave, Waverly, NY
That is where my Dad was baptised in 1942.
(Thank you Kate for the info!)
Even before I found this out, I have been intrigued by the
Episcopalians! there is a very interesting Episcopalian church on East
Ave in Rochester, across from the George Eastman House..My wife and I
were walking around the neighborhood a few years ago, commenting on the
church, saying it "looks Catholic" (im very impressed by Catholic
artwork! they really know how to decorate a church!) when I first
thought "Who are the Episcopalians?? how do they fit into the whole
"Christian" family of denominations?" We didnt know..so I googled
them!
It turns out the Episcopalians are essentially "Catholics twice removed
from Rome!"
First there was the Catholic Church..
Then, in 1534, King Henry VIII of England broke ties with Rome
and the Pope
to make himself the head of the Church of England.
Then! in 1776, we had English citizens (and members of the Church
of England) in America who suddenly found themselves no longer tied to
England, because of the American Revolution!
they clearly could no longer be members of the Church of England..what
to do?
The Episcopal church was created..basically Catholics who seperated
from Rome in 1534,
then seperated from England in 1776..the Episcopalians have retained
much of the original Catholic heritage and rites, and they consider
themselves "Protestant,
yet Catholic"
obviously thats all a huge simplification! ;)
but thats the basic story as I understand it..(if any of that is wrong,
please let me know!)
So its very interesting to me to find out that I have Episcopal
ancestors..
I still dont know if the Episcopal heritage is from my Lawrence side,
or my Grandmother's HILL side!
My Late 20th Century Lawrence's were not church-goers..I dont know why
exactly, just one of those things..although I have been re-exploring my
Christian heritage the last few years, since about age 35.. My wife and
I went to North
Baptist Church for a few years, (We only left North because we
moved.), and now we attend Pearce
Memorial Church. Pearce happens to be Free Methodist, but I dont
consider myself to belong to any specific Protestant denomination..Im a
Christian first and foremost, the exact demoniation isnt terribly
important to me right now.. Im very intersted in the religious lives of
my ancestors! eventually I might add a new page to this website
collection just to share what I have discovered about their various
religious beliefs! since that is also a big part of my personal
heritage.

LAWRENCE
|
Information about a
"Leslie Lawrence Jr."
of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee.
Could he be the son of
Leslie
Lawrence, the brother of my Great Grandfather (8) Charles
Elmer LAWRENCE Sr. ?? I dont yet know, but the dates match!
My Dad's Grand Uncle Leslie is a bit of
a mystery..
I found him listed as a WW1 veteran on a plaque in a church in Waverly
[029]
(the church across the street from the church where my Father was
baptised!)
(thats two different churchs in Waverly with Lawrence family ties)
other than that, very little is known about him.
My Dad recalls he was known as "Uncle Stout", and he lived in Aurora,
Illinois.
He was one of the few Lawrences to leave Waverly, so my Dad never knew
much about him..It is not yet known (by me) if he was ever married or
had any children.
Perhaps Leslie Lawrence Jr.
of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, is not my Great Grand Uncle's son..but its
possible! more research is needed here..

This record was made in 1940, '41 or '42, probably by Frank himself
to record his birth date for the purposes of Social Security. Lodeska was still alive at
this time, and its extremely likely that Lodeska’s Maiden name was recorded
correctly on this document. For me, this puts to rest the question of Lodeska’s maiden
name..it was HEEMAN and not HAMAN.

b. Feb. 8, 1877
New Era, Pa.
d. Sept. 6, 1956 Waverly, N.Y.
Dau. of Amos and Lodeska Heeman Randall.
Wife of
Sebastian Knowles .
(Nellie is buried at Tioga Point cemetery, Athens PA)
That *has* be our Lodeska,
the dates match, and the location matches.
Lodeska would have had this
earlier daughter, Nellie RANDALL, when she was 22 years old. (Lodeska was born
in 1855 [534] )
Her first child with James
TALADA was Frank, born in 1887, when Lodeska was 32 years old.
