St. Thomas Aquinas JV Boys Soccer vs. Coe Brown 9-21-04
The Saints traveled to Northwood to play Coe-Brown Northwood Academy this afternoon. The Bears have a similar record to St. Thomas so it was looking to be a good game. Under a new school rule Brian Sullivan was declared ineligible for the game for coming late that morning.
Game Captains Jamie Phontharaska and Andy Stone went out and won the toss to begin the game.
The Saints took the field with Pat O'Brien and Richard Howard as strikers. Midfielders Chris Rignoli, Andy Stone, Jamie Phontharaska and Justin Guilbert. Jon Campolo at stopper, Max Olsen and Bryan Collins as fullbacks on defense. Gabe Perreault at sweeper and Collin McBride in net. Kevin Schneider
St. Thomas came out strong and appeared to have more control of the ball.

The Bears were physical players and tried to play a lot of through ball. The Saints defense played smart under the leadership of Perreault. He had Collins, Campolo and Olsen stepping up to catch Coe-Brown offsides 6 times in the first half alone.

10 minutes into the half Faisal Gurwala and Kevin Schneider went in at Strikers. Tom Carroll and Matt Roginski went in as outside midfielders.

Olsen had a great game at fullback shutting down the Bears attack.

The first half was controlled by St. Thomas and they out shot Coe-Brown 8-3.
However the scoreboard still read 0-0.
St. Thomas took the field in the second half to kick-off.

There was some time lag as the referees got into position.

St. Thomas added some color to the game hoping for some extra luck.

The second half seemed more evenly matched. While the Saints seemed to control the ball, Coe-Brown started to play more through balls. While Perreault and the defense were able to control most of the runs, the Bears did get more shots on net in the second half.
At 27:39 into the second half Coe-Brown crossed the ball from the left side over to their right forward. He took a shot on what appeared to be a wide open right side of the net. Just when it looked like the ball was going in, McBride made a diving save from the left side to punch the ball wide.

The game ended with the Saints on the attack, but unable to get one by the Coe-Brown defense. The scoreboard still read 0-0 so it was time for golden goal overtime.

2 minutes and 37 seconds into the overtime the Bears got a break away on a thru ball when St. Thomas was all up on the attack. The Coe Brown left striker put a shot by McBride to win the game for his team.
It was a tough loss for the Saints who were also shut-out for the first time this season.
St. Thomas out shot Coe-Brown 15-10. It was as close game between to evenly matched teams. the Saints were called for 5 fouls while the Bears were called for 9. The teams will meet again in the last game of the regular season late in October.
St. Thomas travels to Exeter on Monday for a rematch against the reserve team.
